Merc v6 propaganda - follow up to oil inj. saga

avidda i recently posted regarding oil injection deletion on 1995 merc v6 efi offshore model. after sitting and drinking coffee with the guys at my outboard shop a difference of opinion seemed to arise between the very mechanics who were preparing to work on my 2001-08-07
clanton For SN OG303045 and below the oil is pump into and mixed the vapor separator before going to the injectors. Looks like the same for SN OG303046. You should be able to follow line from oil pump to where ever it goes. Oil is pumped at a rate of 100/1 at idle 50/1 at full throttle. New engine gets 50/1 in fuel tank for break in for a total of 25/1 for breakin. So looks like the oil and fuel mix enters the engine thrugh the injectors, and the injectors can handle a mix from 25/1 to 100/1. I also think it is hard to find mechanics that agree on much. 2001-08-07
J.B. Cornwell From what Clanton says it is clear: you will have no problem pumping premix through the injectors. If they can handle it for break-in, they can handle it later.

ODDD1 go ahead, revisit it...my opinions on last post still stand, same as yesterday, same as tomorrow...... 2001-08-07
corm I'm going sking. 2001-08-07
avidda thanks a ton for all of the input. it is much appreciated. if any of you need any legal questions answered i would be happy to try to help (lawyer by day, boater by every other waking minute) i cannot offer too much tech advice on marine engines, but i 2001-08-07
hondon Merc,s warning system will not shut your engine down but will limit your power.Ask those techs you were speaking with this morning to swap out your warning module before forgoeing your oil inj.. 2001-08-08
FredWinNH How does the alarm condition limit power? Do you know this for certain?

The reason I ask is I have an '88 Merc v6 150 and I have noticed that when I am getting misfiring I will get the low oil alarm. Once the misfiring is cleared up the alarm goes away. I see that there is a wire that goes from the #4 coil primary to the alarm module. I think it may use these pulses as one of the inputs to determine that the motor is actually running and compares that to the pulses from the oil pump rotational sensor.

The other possibilty is that the alarm module could ground that wire thereby dosabling the #4 cylinder which would limit the engine power.

Anyone know the theory of operation on these black boxes?

Prentice I posted a question on July 11th and did not get any response...anyway, I had the problem w/the alarm chirping, similar to your problem..eventually I sent the motor to the shop..diagnosis, one cylinder was scored...if I were you I'd have a compression check done... 2001-08-08
clanton One other thing if you remove oil injection, there is a cap and dummy shaft to hold the lower bushing in place, if not held in place bushing may come out and make contact with crankshaft. 2001-08-08
TONY H Fred if it's like Yamaha did in '87, it limits power by not delivering sparke to one cylinder. it changes cylinder at each rotation. as not to load any one cylinder with raw gas 2001-08-08
avidda After taking the oil pump off the motor and doing some tests(i really do not know all the ins and outs) my tech has informed me that the oil injection gear and pump are functioning fine and are not damaged. He tells me that this leads him to suspect an electrical issue, ie. sensor, short or maybe something called an ECM

He also has agreed to remove the injection system at my request. He believes i am deleting a system that has been functioning flawlessly since 1995, but i am worried about 2001.

i will keep you posted

clanton The first thing the tech should have checked is the warning alarm system, second check output of oil pump. Its all in the service manual. 2001-08-09
corm Clanton is right and I would leave the oil sys on the motor if it was mine. 2001-08-10
12Footer Dangol new fangled injectors! It's enough to make u wanna say ficht it. 2001-08-10
