9O MERCURY 4 STROKE OR YAMAHA PROS & CONS

EKGH2N I JUST BOUGHT MY FIRST BOAT A LUND 1700 FISHERMEN.IT HAS THE MERCURY 90 4 STROKE IS THE YAMAHA WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY WHAT IS THE DIFFERANCE IN THE MOTORS 2002-01-27
MIKE F They might have the same power heads- built by Yamaha. Each with their own companies lower units. I believe that's the case with the 115HP's
I think Yamaha has 80 and 100HP while Merc has the 90HP.

omctech Mike is right. It is built by Yamaha. The lower is a cross between an older style OMC and Mercury, and is virtually bullet proof. Enjoy your motor. With proper maintenance, it will bring you many years of reliable service. 2002-01-28
Hawkeye1 A friend of mine has the 90 merc 4 stroke for 2 seasons now. He skis about 200 days a year and boats all but the dead of winter. This is one tough engine. Its a little doggy out the hole but hangon over 4000 rpm. I have seen him run many runs a 5500 rpm for 15 min at a time many many times a day. The thing is wisper quit and easy on fuel. He makes for a good test boater and I would say the 90 4 stroke qualifys with flying colors. The engine idle real smooth so trolling would be a pleasure. I would say he puts about 700 to 800 hrs a year on it and most are above 4500 rpms. 2002-01-28
Johnson556 Have had a Merc for years and had no problem with it just once a year did pm on it friends have had yamaha's and did ok you will not go wrong with the Merc. 2002-01-28
EKGH2N Thankyou very much for the imput I can sleep a little eaiser thanks again 2002-01-28
skier Mike, I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that Mercury went in with Honda on the 4 stroke engines. 2002-02-01
wayne c. Glad to hear that you fellas like the 90 HP Merc 4-stroke. I bought an 02 in Oct.. It replaced a '99 Yamaha 80 HP 4-stroke which went to bottom of lake in a storm. Merc powerhead is Yamaha--thats why I bought it. Dealer that offered new boat did'nt sell Yamaha, or it would have been another, as it was the best engine I'd ever run-this is my 4th boat. Good luck to all! 2002-02-02
