Why is Mercruiser fuel pump so expensive? Can I use a universal automotive pump?

Homerr	I was wanting to pick up a spare fuel pump for the boat, but Mercruiser's site wants $180 !!! OUCH!! Can I use a regular automotive electric pump? Sure, the fittings won't be exact, but you can modify some rubber hose with the right fittings.. Opinions? Thanks, H.	2002-04-11
Trent Crawford	Mercrusier pumps are Coast Guard approved. Its made as you know with the hose going to the carb. This is in case the diaphram in the pump goes bad and the carb will suck up the extra fuel into the engine instead of in the boat. To answer your question..Will a car pump fit? Yes it will. How much do your familly and friends that ride with you worth? Also if somthing happens YOU are responsible for not putting on CG approved parts. And your insurance will be void. seahorse5	It is Federal law that fuel and electrical items have to be Coast Guard approved for safety. Contact a NAPA parts store and order a Sierra fuel pump replacement for your motor. They are less than OEM parts, good quality, and are Coast Guard approved. Sierra, owned by Teleflex steering company, handles marine replacement parts. The catalog is about an inch thick.	2002-04-12
