69 Johnson 9.5 gear oil leak though exhaust

slow_boat My beloved 9r-69s had a 'run-in' with a river rock while drifting downstream. The collision broke off the acorn nut cap on one motor mount & cracked one side of the clamshell housing. I had the crack welded but did not replace the motor mount @ that time. I would now like to do so & would like to know if anyone on this list has had good/bad success with any internet Johnson parts suppliers.

Also, would like to know how to remove the lower unit to replace the upper shaft o-ring. The engine leaks gear lube through the exhaust outlet when stored laying flat on its 'back' & I suspect this is where it leaks out??. I have removed the 4 bolts, placed shift lever so I could remove the shift linkage clamping bolt between the lower unit/exhaust housing, but the lower unit appears to have something else holding it in place?

Thanks

fireman 757 As far as I can remember there is nothing else holding it as long as you have disconnected the shift rod. It might just be stuck after all these years. Try tapping gently with a rubber mallet and a board. See if it opens a crack at your lower gasket. There have been a couple of posts a while back about the drive shaft being stuck in the power head but they never replied how they got it off. 2002-07-15
slow_boat Thanks Fireman. I have ordered the shop manual just to be sure. I DO have a manual for '67 & older Johnsons which I thought would cover this topic but, since mine is a '69 model, & following the procedure in my manual didn't seem to do the trick, thought maybe something had changed. I appreciate your help & will wait on the new manual to arrive just to be sure [Wink] 2002-07-16
Frank Martin call ray at 708-862-2407 he is a 83 year old man half blind but still very sharp more info than you will ever get out of any manual and he probably has the used parts you will need 2002-07-17
slow_boat Thanks OMC Frank...will give Ray a call. 2002-07-20
